English Championship Betting Information

  • The Championship was introduced in 2004 and was formerly known as the Football League 1st Division since the Premier League was formed in 1992. It was originally known as the old 2nd Division and is still recognised as the 2nd tier of English football. Currently referred to as the Npower Championship for sponsorship reasons, it's thought to be the wealthiest non-top flight division in the world.

The Championship currently comprises 24 clubs and each club plays every other side home and away. 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat. The bottom 3 clubs are relegated to League 1 whilst 2 teams are automatically promoted from League 1 plus the winners of the League 1 play-offs. The top 2 Championship sides are automatically promoted to the Premier League whilst the next 4 top sides compete in the play-offs with the winner also gaining promotion.
