World Matchplay Darts Betting Information
The World Matchplay is a darts tournament run by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) and has been played annually since 1994 at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool. The World Matchplay is seen as the second largest PDC darts tournament by virtue of the fact that the whole tournament was sold out within three days of tickets going on sale. Stan James has been the sponsor of the tournament since 2000 making them the longest running sponsors of a PDC darts tournament.
The format used in the World Matchplay is a legs format but it differs to other darts tournaments in that there is no deciding leg meaning players must win by two clear legs. For instance, the first round is played over the first to ten legs but if the score ends 9-9, then subsequent legs are played until either player gains a two leg advantage.
As can be seen from the list of previous World Matchplay winners, Phil Taylor is not only the current reigning champion but he's been by far the most successful having won the tournament 12 times since it's inception; additionally, he's never lost a final. Since Larry Butler, from the United States, won the inaugural tournament in 1994, the World Matchplay has been completely dominated by English players.
