English Premier League Betting Information

  • The Premier League was formed in 1992 following a decision by 1st Division football league clubs to break away and take advantage of lucrative television rights. Originally known as the Premiership, it was rebranded as the Premier League in 2007 and is currently referred to as the Barclays Premier League following sponsorship by Barclays Bank. It's the most watched football league in the world with revenues to match.

Only 4 clubs have won the Premier League with money obviously playing a massive part. Blackurn won the title once in the early 90's but otherwise the Premier League has been shared between Arsenal and Chelsea (3 titles apiece), and Manchester United who've amassed 12 Premier League titles (not including old first division titles). Arsenal appear to have fallen away this season but Manchester City are the new kids on the block with the financial muscle to push United hard.

The Premier League currently comprises 20 clubs and each club plays every other side home and away. 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat. The bottom 3 clubs are relegated to the Championship whilst 2 teams are automatically promoted from the Championship plus the winners of the Championship play-offs. The top 4 Premier League sides qualify for the Champions League although the 3rd and 4th placed clubs must play Champions League qualifying rounds. The 5th placed Premier League team qualifies for the Europa League and this can be extended as far as 7th depending on how successful the top 4 clubs have been in the domestic cup competitions.
