Aviva Premiership Betting Information
The top tier of English rugby union is currently known as the Aviva Premiership because of the league's current sponsorship. The competition has been played since 1987 and it's other guises include the Courage League, the Allied Dunbar Premiership, the Zurich Premiership and the Guiness Premiership. Premiership status conferrs automatic qualification for Europe's two rugby union club competitions, namely the Heineken Cup and the European Challenge Cup. The bottom side in the Premiership is relegated to the RFU Championship.
Until 2002/03, the regular season winners were declared the champions but since then the grand final winners are the champions. From 2002/03, the grand final took place betwen the regular season winners and the winner of a match between the second and third placed sides but in 2005/06 the format was again re-jigged with the first placed team also playing the fourth placed side in another semi-final.
With 12 sides making up the Aviva Premiership, each season comprises 22 matches per team. Four points are awarded for a victory, two for a draw with a bonus point up for grabs if the losing team loses a match by seven points or less, or to any side that scores more than four tries in a match. The top four sides then go through to compete for grand final honours.
