Scottish Premier League Betting Information

  • The Scottish Premier League was formed in 1997 when the old Scottish 1st Division clubs decided to split from the Scottish Football League following the example set by their English counterparts in 1992. It's currently referred to as the Clydesdale Bank Premier League for sponsorship reasons but most know it as the SPL.

The Old Firm (Rangers and Celtic) have dominated Scottish football for years and no other club has won the Scottish Premier League since its inception. In fact only 1 other club, Hearts, have broken the top two's dominance when they finished 2nd to Celtic in 2005/06. It shows the extent of the stranglehold that the Old Firm have on Scottish football but they still struggle to compete with other European clubs because of the relatively low television revenue.

The Scottish Premier League currently comprises 12 clubs and each club ideally plays each other twice at home and twice away though 2 phases of matches with seeded teams means this isn't always possible. 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a defeat. The bottom club is relegated to the Scottish 1st Division whilst the top club from the Scottish 1st Division is promoted. The top 2 Scottish Premier League sides qualify for the Champions League although the 2nd placed club must play Champions League qualifying rounds. The 3rd and 4th placed Scottish Premier League teams qualify for the Europa League along with the winners of the Scottish Cup providing that the cup winners haven't already qualified for European football. If the Scottish Cup winners have already qualified for the Champions League, the cup runners-up go into the Europa League and if they've already qualified for the Europa League that place falls to the highest placed finisher in the SPL not qualified for European football.
